PreAct is saving lives by using technology and analytics to prevent vehicle-related injuries and death.
A Portland based company, PreAct is commercializing technology that was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, an agency of the United States Department of Defense, to reduce injuries and deaths in road-traffic accidents. The technology was developed over 10-years and uses near-field sensing, automotive sensors and infrastructure to predict and prepare a vehicle and its occupants for an imminent crash.
PreAct’s innovative sensor-based safety technology continuously monitors a vehicle’s surroundings to identify an imminent collision, and proactively engages preemptive countermeasures to protect occupants before the impact occurs. This technology provides earlier indications of a collision, allowing systems to gain the necessary time to deploy safety mechanisms including tightening seat belts and setting off larger and slower inflating airbags.
Over 3 million people are injured and 40,000 deaths occur in road traffic accidents in the United States every year. Sophisticated pre-crash technologies like PreAct have the potential to reduce traffic deaths and severe injuries by 86%, saving the healthcare industry an estimated $20 billion dollars per year in claims reductions in the US alone. PreAct was recently acknowledged as being one of the top 3 disruptors in the automotive field by SBD Automotive.
